I'm interested in the psychology of pain generally.  My research has focused primarily on pain expression and communication, in both experimental and clinical populations.  I've also published on specific pain populations, including the transition from acute to chronic low back pain and shoulder pain.  My group published the first successful application of computer vision techniques to the detection of facial expressions of pain.  Latterly, I've pursued work on empathy and third-person pain perception.

Research Keywords: emotion, expression, third-person perception, empathy
