Faculty of Medicine

University of British Columbia

Prof. Puil is a Professor Emeritus in the UBC Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics. With colleagues (MacLeod et al. 2010), he discovered a novel first-in-class analgesic prototype isovaline. He pioneered research demonstrating how membrane properties of neurons interact to amplify inputs through resonant behavior.  He has a long-standing interest in a neurophysiological basis of neurotransmission (such as in pain). In 2006, with colleagues he demonstrated a neurotransmitter role for glycine in the thalamus (Ghavanini et al.). His Research Interests include: central nervous system physiology and pharmacology, cellular basis of awareness and sleep, synaptic communication and neuromodulation in the brain, and intracellular recording, neuronal modelling, voltage- and patch-clamp analysis of neurons in the brain.
